RainHost.net Cloud VPS – A Short Review

Need some initial information of how RainHost’s cloud vps can perform?  Find out how its connection speed, disk I/O and basic server information below..

About RainHost.net: This VPS hosting provider is said established since 2013 and providing XEN VPS, OnApp Cloud VPS, SSD VPS, OpenVZ VPS, Windows VPS and Dedicated Severs at reasonable price. According to their Linkdin page, all their servers are secured and in top level Data centers. They also claimed having recorded 100% uptime continuously in many months and never oversold their servers! That sounds awesome.

One thing makes me interested is the inclusion of free DDOS protection across their 160Gbps network. Currently their services are available at 12 location in 4 continent around the world.

OnApp SSD Cloud VPS Performance

Lucky enough for me that its Admin contacted me directly giving me opportunity to test their cloud vps and to share the result here in my blog so all my fellow readers will know how is the performance of OnApp-based cloud VPS.

For your information, while many cloud providers are using OpenStack or VMWare, RainHost is proudly using OnApp as the backbone of their cloud vps. OnApp Cloud is the leading cloud management platform for hosts, telcos and other service providers. With OnApp in a datacenter, a provider can sell the complete range of Infrastructure-as-a-Service products through an intuitive web and mobile control panel. OnApp is a multi-tenant, multi-OS and multi-hypervisor platform that supports Xen and KVM.

The VPS I Used

In this simple benchmark test I was using RainHost’s Cloud VPS Server 2GB plan featuring 2CPU core, 2GB RAM, 30GB SSD, 250 Mbps port, 3TB bandwidth, 1 ipv4 and 10GB snapshot storage. Normally this plan costs $15.99/month.

Freevps Benchmark Test

rainhost benchmark freevps

Wow! Look at that I/O speed! That’s what we really expect from SSD-powered server right? The server has access to 2 CPU cores with clock speed at 2199.998 MHz. Download speed results are also great to countries across Europe since the server is located at UK while connection to states in US are also optimal and decent.

VHWInfo Test

rainhost benchmark vhwinfo

This test shows some basic information about the VPS including hostname, OS, kernel, virtualization, CPU type and speed, etc. Form that test I found out that KVM is utilized as the main software to handle virtualization. The vCPU part is showing similar result as the first test (freevps script). I belive all information above are easy to understand and you can see its awesomeness by yourself.

Simple DD Test

rainhost benchmark io dd

Done simple DD test twice and the result is seen above. That’s really a decent SSD speed. Fast enough to do almost any tasks those need fast storage drive like Varnish Cache, offloaded database hosting, etc.

Network Speed Test

rainhost benchmark speedtest

then done it again..

badge..

speedtest result RainHost

Speedtest.net conducts download and upload speed always from nearest location by default (it can customized though) and the result is pretty impressive.

Short Review

While not many providers dare enough to offer Enterprise grade cloud technology via OnApp, RainHost is coming with fully featured OnApp cloud infrastructure delivering KVM based VPS hosting powered with fast SSD. Not sure enough whether it is configured in RAID or not.

RainHost offers very wide range services including OpenVZ VPS, SSD VPS, Xen VPS, Windows SSD VPS, Budget Windows VPS and OnApp Cloud VPS. Their website said their services are ready to be deployed in many locations including Sydney (AU), Hongkong, Singapore, Vienna, Amsterdam, London, Dublin, Frankfurt, Dallas, Los Angeles, Chicago and Buffalo. But however there is not enough detailed information in which Datacenter servers are located. As per my test box above, my OnApp cloud vps is located at London, UK, which the IP says IOMart (the parent company of RapidSwitch).

Nothing bad about server performance and all simple benchmark test results above have proved it. Although I can’t find detailed information about the RainHost company (is it LLC, Inc. or sole proprietorship?) along in which Datacenters their servers are located, their official site has really nice design. Yet, that nice design has also been implemented to Client Area, a place where clients can manage their account along with their servers. Yup, there is no Solusvm or other thirdparty server panel. All server management tasks can be done inside the Client Area. That’s really a life safer and it makes things simpler.

Currently no IPv6 IPs are available and I hope they will add IPv6 as one of each server’s features in the future. Also, I can’t tell about uptime performance because such information needs constant monitoring after several time periods.

Conclusion

RainHost offers wide range VPS hosting services from OpenVZ, Xen, to OnApp Cloud KVM server. The performance of their cloud server is proven being awesome except the fact that connection is in 250 Mbps Port but it still delivers great download speed from locations across Europe and US. The CPU speed is good, the disk I/O speed is good, plus its free DDOS protection that makes it more awesome. Do not forget that you can also make use of free snapshot storage to save snapshot backup of your cloud server.

Priced at USD $15.99/month for 2GB cloud vps, I’m sure it will be more awesome if they also offer smaller plan like 512MB or 1GB RAM.

Final words: Worth its price, not disappointing.
